Alpha Stryke was my first true performing
band, and I have some very fond memories from this time of
my life. I learned a lot about how to perform, how not to
perform, and certainly how not to DRESS! This was a time when
makeup and spandex ruled the day. I was also big into the
bandana thing and very long earrings. It was quite funny,
looking back, but we thought we were the coolest! Alpha Stryke
had a few primary members from beginning to end. They were
DLW on lead vocals, Jimmy Cobb on bass, Ron Marquardt on lead
and rhythm guitars, Brian Smith on guitars, and Ronnie Davis
on drums. We had another drummer earlier on, but I can't seem
to recall his name. Our soundman is notable as well...his
name is Jim Gunn. We performed primarily in the Savannah,
GA area, which is where I grew up. For a long time we were
the house band at a place called Ollie Mae's on Bay Street.
It was a long and narrow bar, that seemed to always be full
of bikers and military guys...a lethal mix. They used to love
my big flip from the bar somewhere in the beginning of a Van
Halen song(of course). We practiced in the basement, which
used to be an old disco in the 60's and 70's, in a building
that has been around since well before 1800. It was a very
cool place. To the right are some images from that time in
my life.
